WHY I Decided to Start Sharing Young Living

Hi friends! My WHY is long winded, so please bear with me. I’m sharing my whole story incase one of you connect with or relate to it. Here we go…

In December 2017, I purchased the Premium Starter Kit for our family (or me) for Christmas, primarily as an alternative to burning candles in our home. At the time, I had an infant and an almost two year-old who was an active climber. As much as my husband and I loved to burn candles, they were not safe around our little ones. We loved how essential oils could be used for aromatherapy purposes and that the diffuser automatically turned off. Good-bye to worrying about flames and the house burning down!

After becoming a member of Young Living, I was welcomed into a resourceful community of women and men who educate, encourage, and inspire one another how to use essential oils in their everyday lives. With the guidance of this group, I started learning more about essential oils and their many health and wellness benefits. As I started sharing this new wealth of information with my husband, he was instantly skeptical and told me I was getting myself into “witchcraft”.

About 2-3 months after purchasing my Premium Starter Kit, I learned about Essential Rewards (Young Living’s monthly subscription service program) and evaluated my order history. Each month I was trying new products from different Young Living lines (KidScents, Vitality, Thieves), but I wasn’t earning a percentage back in points or receiving free promotional products for my orders. Joining Essential Rewards was a no brainer! In retrospect, at that moment, I had officially adopted the Young Living lifestyle.

Since Essential Rewards allowed me to try new plant-based ingredient products for my family each month, I quickly fell in love with all things KidScents and Thieves. The products we were using that I thought were ‘green’ turned out to be toxic due to some sneaky ingredients on label. Slowly, month by month, I started “ditching” those products and “switching” over to Young Living. The more I used the products and witnessed the benefits they had on my family, the more passionate I became.

Through the oil group, I had learned that there was a business opportunity to share these products, but I was not interested, and there was NEVER any pressure to do so. One evening in late April 2018, my brother was over for a visit. After changing one of my daughters diapers, I started up the diffuser with Purification essential oil to freshen the air. My brother was pleasantly surprised with how nice our house smelt (“Yo, what is that?!”), was really into the concept of diffusing essential oils and asked, “So, where do I buy one of those?” We used my Member ID link that my enroller had told me about, signed him up on the spot, and earned a $50 commission from Young Living.

The next morning I had received a text from my enroller, Liz, congratulating me on my first enrollment. Even though I wasn’t interested in the business, I thought this was a really sweet gesture, thanked her, and told her I was just signing up my brother. It really got me to thinking though how easy my “first sale” had been. All I did was use the product as I naturally do in my home, and the oils sold themselves. That evening, I plugged into our team’s private Facebook group and listened to a Business 101 Zoom call that was saved on the Google Drive. On the Google Drive, I also saw a TON of resources to help members with their business: graphics to share, scripts to host oil classes, email templates, and focus videos that taught about different business topics. It was overwhelming how much support this group was giving its business builders. After a couple of nights of going through the Google Drive into the wee hours of the morning, I decided that I wanted to “go all in”!

When I talked with my husband about my plan he told me he would support whatever I decided to do, but it sounded like a “pyramid scheme” and that I was joining a “cult”. Despite his opinions, I knew this is something I really wanted to do and told him I was going to prove him wrong. On May 1, 2018, Lavender and Love Essentials was born.

If you’re still with me, this leads me into my WHY! Besides being genuinely passionate about the products and wanting to share this new side of health and wellness that I never knew existed with my family and friends… I really did it for ME. As you may know, I’m blessed to be a stay-at-home mom to my two young daughters, Mairen (almost 3) and Mae (15 months). As much as I LOVE being home with my sweet girls, I really wanted to do something for myself outside of being a mom. I wanted to challenge and push myself out of my comfort zone, use the creative side of my brain, and engage with other like-minded adults. Also, I wanted to prove my husband wrong about this “pyramid scheme” and “cult”. Previously, I had been an upper elementary / middle school special education teacher and saw an opportunity in this business to use my skills to teach others how to support their health and wellness with essential oils and clean products.

Month by month, I’ve helped my family, friends, and Instagram followers bring essential oils, non-toxic household cleaning products, all natural makeup and personal care products into their homes. In the process, I’ve advanced ranks in Young Living’s organizational structure and brought home a little bit more money each month for my family. In November 2018, I hit Silver, the first leadership rank in Young Living, and brought home my biggest paycheck yet. Through watching me grow this business, my husband has become a believer in the “witchcraft” asking for Panaway for his sore muscles after working around the house or golf. After witnessing the love and support this team gives one another and how we genuinely want to help raise each other up, he has dropped the notion of this being a “pyramid scheme”. When I shared with him that as a Silver leader I can qualify to have an all-expenses paid trip to Utah to visit Young Living’s farms and witness first-hand how the business operates, he replied with a smile, “It still sounds like a cult.” 🙃

Going back to my team, I really can’t describe in words how valuable it is to be on the right team. Since the day I got my starter kit, my upline leader Liz made sure I knew how to use my essential oils. She sent me a welcome package in the mail to help get me started with diffuser blends, roller recipes, and even sent me a “Calm” roller for those stressful mama moments. To further my education on essential oils and clean products, she invited me to virtual classes herself and our other upline leader, Marissa taught on Facebook. Since the day I signed up my brother, she personally reached out to me to congratulate me and since deciding to do this business, she has provided me with free training on how to take beautiful photos for my Instagram feed, how to grow my following, talks with me 1:1 about my business strategy, and the list goes on and on. The support that I receive from ALL of my upline leaders: Kate, Liz, Marissa, Brittney and Jonathan is unbelievable. Kate inspires me how to share authentically and answers my everyday questions. Marissa motivates me to push my boundaries on our bi-monthly “huddle” and “hustle” calls she hosts each month, and takes time out of her busy schedule to chat 1:1 with me about business strategy as well. Brittney and Jonathan have a way with their words and “preach to the choir” when we’re in a slump or struggling with our businesses and pull us right out of that rut!

Next and certainly not least, my downline and cross-line team! My business would absolutely not be where it is today without my downline team. On my team I have a group of women that started out as complete strangers to me coming from all different walks of life and areas of the country. Some stay-at-home moms like myself, a newlywed wife and dog mom starting her marriage with her husband as new home owners, a part-time working mama and fellow educator with an infant and toddler as well, full-time working moms of a teenaged boys, etc. We come from California, Chicago, Florida, Minnesota, and New Jersey! Even though I’ve never personally met my downline team or cross-line friends, we are that – friends! It’s wild how Young Living, technology and the internet has brought us together and helped build this sense of community and friendships! We are on this text message app called Group Me, where we bounce ideas off of one another daily, help answer each other’s questions, and lend advice or support.

I’m just getting started on this wild ride and can’t wait to see where it brings me and who else I’ll connect with.
