Essential Oils + Kids

Happy Friday everyone! As with the Pregnancy, Birth, Breastfeeding, and Beyond class, I wanted to put all the information from the Essential Oils + Kids class in a post for you so that you can refer back to it at your leisure. After all, we are busy mommas soaking up the end of summer with our kiddos and getting ready for back-to-school! I’m sure most of you don’t have time to watch the 40 minute replay, but it is up on my Facebook page if you want it! Thank you to Cusp Essentials and Rose Gold Wellness for this information!

  • I cannot treat, diagnose or cure you, and the information is for educational purposes only. I am here to help you learn what essential oils are and how you can incorporate them into your life.
  • As always, before you embark on an essential oil journey, consult with your healthcare provider.
  • Remember that you are responsible for your family’s health. This class includes holistic alternative ideas, not medical treatment.

*** Precautions for Toddlers and Young Children (2-5 years old) ***

• Oils generally safe to use on children include but are not limited to: bergamot, cedarwood, roman chamomile, cypress, frankincense, geranium, ginger, lavender, lemon, marjoram, tea tree, orange, rose otto, rosemary, rosewood, sandalwood, thyme, ylang ylang…

• Dilute all essential oils for toddlers and young children. When in doubt, mix a 1:30 blend. One part or drop of essential oil and 30 parts or drops carrier oil.

  • Moms, always use the oil on yourself first before applying to children. If it is hot on your skin, chances are it will be on your children’s.

Children, like any of us, often wake up in the morning or from a nap, feeling cranky. Making sure they get proper sleep at night, or appropriate naps during the day, is an important factor as well.

Diffusing essential oils can also help wake them (and you!) up and boost their (your) mood.

  • “Perk Up”: Peppermint (3 drops) + Lemon (3 drops) {kit oils}
  • “Cause I’m Happy”: Peppermint (2 drops) + Frankincense (2 drops) {kit oils}

Did you know that Young Living has a KidScents collection of essential oils and personal care products that are made just for little ones? Quickly after receiving my Premium Starter Kit of essential oils and falling in love with them, I wanted to see what Young Living had to offer children. The KidScents essential oils are made up of mild blends that are safe, pure alternatives to commercial solutions. Plus, they are specially formulated to just the right strength for children, so you never have to dilute them. (Young Living, Source: KidScents Oils Flyer)

The KidScents collection of essential oils was my first purchase outside of my Premium Starter Kit!

Young Living recommends using the AromaGlide Roller Fitments 10 pack. With a roller top for each of the KidScents oils, and some leftover for your own oils, you can avoid your oils coming into contact with the roller and then your child’s oil. Add these to your next Essential Rewards (ER) order!!!

According to the bottle labels, they recommended application is for children ages 2-12. As always, contact your pediatrician or health care provider before using essential oils on your children.

* TummyGize was THE OIL that made me a believer in the power of oils. I personally like to use TummyGize on my stomach in place of DiGize for its cooling sensation.

Thieves (kits)– A blend of essential oils that offer cleansing properties and immune support. Read about the interesting history of Thieves essential oil, which dates back to the 15th century during the plague HERE.

  • Blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary.

Suggested Uses:

  • Pop roller fitment on top and roll on the bottoms of your feet.

  • Add one drop to 5-6 wool dryer balls for laundry.

Children, like any of us, often need periods throughout the day for calming down. Whether it’s after a lot of play, school, activities and sports, meltdowns, unwinding before bed, etc. Making sure they get proper sleep at night, or appropriate naps during the day, is an important factor as well.

Diffuse the following oils, roll diluted on the bottoms of feet, or add to bath:

  • Gentle Baby: blend of Coriander, Geranium, Palmarosa, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, and other sweet-smelling essential oils.
  • Peace and Calming: sweet blend of Ylang Ylang, Orange, Tangerine, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy.
  • Stress Away (kit): mix of Vanilla, Lime, Copaiba, Lavender, Cedarwood, and Ocotea.

Aside from the KidScents collection of essential oils, we also use some of the KidScents personal care products. These essential-oil infused products are made with safe, mild formulas just for your little ones. Currently, we are using the bath gel and lotion in my 2.5 year-old daughter’s daily routine.

Safe, gentle soap that cleanses and protects the skin. It is formulated with natural ingredients, MSM, aloe vera, anti-oxidants, and pure therapeutic-grade Lemon and Cedarwood essential oils. Additionally, this liquid soap is pH balanced for children’s skin. It contains NO mineral oils, synthetic perfumes, artificial colorings, or toxic ingredients.

A little goes a long way, so we apply a small amount to a mesh pouf shower ball to work up a luxurious lather. From our personal experience, we have also found the bath gel to be “tear-free”. Although it doesn’t specifically state this on the label, our toddler has never reacted when the soap accidentally trickled into her eyes. Lastly, the bath gel has a fresh clean scent, which I take joy in, when I wrap her up in her warm Minnie Mouse towel.

The natural components in this shampoo—aloe, MSM, Chamomile, and Tangerine and Lemon essential oils—effectively and gently cleanse without causing irritation. Contains NO synthetic perfumes, colors, or toxic ingredients.

Safe, gentle ingredients to moisturize and soften sensitive skin. The premium blend of natural ingredients, MSM, shea butter, aloe vera, and pure therapeutic-grade Cedarwood and Geranium essential oils supports healthy-looking skin for children of all ages. It contains NO mineral oils, synthetic perfumes, artificial colorings, or toxic ingredients.

As with the bath gel, a little goes a long way, so we apply the lotion all over, focusing on her arms and legs.  Lastly, it has a floral woodsy aroma that makes her smell SO GOOD right before bed!

We use this homemade body butter to support a skin condition my oldest daughter has. While I can’t claim that it has cured or treated it, it does support the bumps and redness on the back of her arms and legs. We also like this body butter on the baby for the dry, winter months.

  • 1 cup of organic shea butter
  • 1/4 cup of organic coconut oil
  • 10 drops of Lavender (starter kit) to soothe and nourish
  • 10 drops of Frankincense (starter kit) to moisturize and smooth
  • 10 drops of Tea Tree to cleanse and purify
  • 10 drops of Geranium to cleanse
  • 10 drops of Myrrh to deeply moisturize

Melt the shea butter and coconut oil on the stove top. Once it is melted, pour it into a little glass container with a lid so you can store it. LET IT COOL. Add the 10 drops of each essential oil and place it in the refrigerator overnight to harden to a butter texture.

SleepyIze (KidScents): Combination of lavender, geranium, Roman chamomile, sacred frankincense, bergamot, tangerine, valerian, and rue.

Suggested Uses:

  • Apply to children’s feet as part of a before-nap or bedtime routine.

  • Diffuse at bedtime for a peaceful aromatic environment.
  • Add 2-4 drops to a warm evening bath.
  • Rub into hands and smooth over your child’s pillow as part of his or her nightly routine.
